Late summer is a great time to focus on a few home maintenance tasks to get you ready for the start of the rainy, cold season. In particular, before it starts raining, check your roof.
Someone should get on your roof to look for any damaged shingles or damaged flashing that may turn into roof leaks this winter—many roof leaks occur at areas where the roof meets something protruding from the roof (a plumbing vent, the chimney, etc). Hire someone to make necessary repairs—call me if you need a recommendation for a good roof contractor.
Next, check out the status of your gutters and downspouts. It’s amazing how quickly debris accumulates gutters, leading to clogs and gutter overflows. If your downspouts don’t enter into some sort of underground drainage system, make sure that they terminate at least 10 feet from your foundation—if you have water in your basement or crawlspace, it’s most likely due to inadequate diversion of roof drainage.
