Spring is my favorite season here in Seattle – we get more light, it’s warmer, everything seems to be in bloom.
It’s also time to take a few laps around the exterior of your home to see what’s happened during the dark, cold, and wet months. Here’s some areas to focus on:
- Check the roof for any loose or damaged shingles. Use binoculars if you can’t get on your roof.
- Check the chimney (if you have one) for damaged bricks or mortar.
- Focus on the siding and trim especially the caulking joints between the two. Look for any gaps or cracked caulking.
- Make sure your downspouts extend away from the foundation.
- Clean your gutters and look for any areas of standing water in the gutters that would indicate improper slope.
- Clean your dryer vent cover and if possible, the whole dryer vent ducting.
- How’s your deck? Check for deteriorated boards and loose railings.
- If you have a heat pump or AC unit, cut back any vegetation from around the unit to allow for proper air flow. (You might also want to have the unit serviced before the summer).
